How we score Kedah homestays
What this page is
Malaysia Homestay Guide is a directory of homestay businesses across Kedah, currently covering 960 listings. Every listing gets a composite score from 0 to 100, built entirely from measured signals tied to that business's public customer reviews. This page explains what goes into that number, why it's weighted the way it is, and where it falls short.
The five signals, heaviest first
The composite score blends five signals. Each one is calculated the same way for every listing, so scores are comparable across the whole directory.
| Signal | Weight | What it measures |
|---|---|---|
| Sentiment | 28% | A synthesis of what recent reviews actually say: recurring praise, recurring complaints, and the balance between them |
| Rating | 26% | The Google aggregate star rating |
| Volume | 20% | How many reviews a listing has, log-scaled so a handful of reviews doesn't carry the same weight as hundreds |
| Recency | 12% | How recently customers have left reviews |
| Completeness | 14% | Whether phone, website, hours and address are listed and accurate |
Why sentiment carries the most weight
A star average on its own hides patterns. Two homestays can sit at the same 4.3 stars while one has a spread of small gripes and the other has a stack of recent reviews all pointing at the same problem: noisy air conditioning, a host who's hard to reach, cleanliness slipping since a change in management. The average number looks identical. The experience waiting for the next guest is not.
That's why we read what recent reviews actually describe rather than just averaging the stars. Sentiment scoring looks for repeated themes, both good and bad, across recent review text and weighs a listing accordingly. It's the only one of the five signals that can catch a business trending in the wrong direction before the star average catches up, which is why it's weighted above rating itself.
Why the other signals matter
Rating still matters because it's the most direct signal of guest satisfaction and it's what most people check first. Volume matters because a 5.0 average from three reviews tells you almost nothing, while a 4.6 average from three hundred is a much sturdier number; log-scaling means extra reviews beyond a certain point add less to the score, rather than letting sheer review count drown everything else out. Recency matters because a homestay's condition, management, and service can change year to year, and reviews from two years ago say less about what you'll get this weekend than reviews from last month. Completeness matters in a practical way: a listing with no working phone number or address is harder to book with confidence, whatever its reviews say.
Honest limits
We synthesise reviews into a score and a short summary of themes; we don't republish the review text itself, and every listing links out to its Google listing so you can read the source reviews yourself. Homestays with few recent reviews get a lower-confidence score, and those listings are labelled as such on the page, because a score built on a thin or stale sample deserves less trust than one built on a steady stream of recent feedback.
Editorial independence and paid placement
Scores are earned from this rubric and the underlying review data, full stop. They are never edited by hand. Where paid placement exists on the site, it is always labelled clearly and it never changes a listing's score. Where a list's picks or order have been reviewed or curated by an editor rather than generated purely by the score, that is disclosed on the page itself, for example on our best guest house picks.
Who's behind this
Malaysia Homestay Guide is published by Meridian Guides, which has run independent city directories for everyday services across Malaysia since 2025, starting with Kedah homestays. The rankings on this site are maintained by Janice, Editor, who oversees how the scoring rubric is applied across the directory. Data is refreshed on a monthly cycle, and each listing carries a "last verified" stamp showing when it was last checked, so you can see the maintenance is ongoing rather than a one-time snapshot. You can reach the publisher at hello@meridianguides.my or visit meridianguides.my. For more on the directory, start from the home page.
FAQ
- Does paying for placement improve a homestay's score?
- No. Where paid placement exists on the site it's always labelled, and it never changes a listing's composite score. The score comes only from the five weighted signals described on this page.
- Why does sentiment count for more than the star rating?
- A star average can hide a pattern that only shows up when you read what reviews actually say. Sentiment scoring looks at recent review themes directly, so it can flag a repeated problem, or a genuine strength, before it fully shifts the average rating.
- What happens if a homestay only has a few reviews?
- Listings with few recent reviews get a lower-confidence score and are labelled as such, since a score built on a thin sample is less reliable than one built on a steady flow of recent feedback.
- How often is the data updated?
- The directory refreshes monthly. Each listing also shows a "last verified" date so you can see when it was last checked rather than relying on a static snapshot.
